Description: Shallow rock
raises the estimated cost of deepening the Arthur Kill by a factor
of 2. Multi-channel reflection seismic and side-scan sonar show
that the sandstones and shale are shingled and strike at 36 from
north and dip 15 to northwest. Seismic velocity determined by semblance
analysis shows that (a) the contact between the
sandstones and shale is sharp, (b) the shale strata are strongly
layered, and (c) the diggability varies from layer to layer.
